George, Use Online Marketplaces as Research Tools

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to talk about online marketplaces, and why you
can almost always use them as research tools.

-----

As you probably know, a great strategy to achieve your goals
is to look at people who already accomplished similar things,
and then analyze how they did, learning as many lessons as
possible.

If you want to build a popular and profitable website, therefore,
you should look at websites that already are popular and
profitable, and then learn how they achieved it.

But where do you find such websites?

That is where online marketplaces come into play. One I already
talked about and that I always check is Flippa.com. There you'll
find hundreds of websites being auctioned, and while most are
crap, some are really big and profitable websites, and the
owners usually share all the strategies they used to build,
promote and monetize the sites. In other words, it's a gold
mine of information if you are willing to analyze and
understand what is going on behind the scenes.

Another type of marketplace I like to use for research
purposes are the advertising ones. For instance, check
BuySellAds.com. There you'll find hundreds of websites selling
ad space. The most popular ones get as much as 20 million
monthly pageviews. You then can analyze:

- What niche they are focusing on.
- What kind of design they use.
- What kind of content or service they offer to visitors.
- What methods they use to generate traffic.
- What monetization methods they are using.

The takeaway message is: wherever there's a marketplace
with popular websites listed there's an opportunity for you
to learn.

Talk to you next week,

George, Ever Considered Freelance Writing Online?

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to talk about freelance writing online, and why I
think it's a great way to make money online, especially if you
are new on the Internet.

-------

When you are getting started with your own blog or website, it
can be challenging to monetize it. Maybe you don't have a lot
of traffic, so despite how hard you try the money from selling
ads won't be significant. Maybe you do have some traffic
already, but getting decent advertising deals takes time, and
you get your hosting bills to pay!

Is there a solution for this problem? Yes, and for many people
the solution is called freelance writing.

The only requirement to make money with freelance writing is
to like to write. You don't even need to be a great writer. As
long as you know the basic grammar rules and don't make gross
spelling mistakes you are already qualified for most jobs.

And there cool thing is that there are thousands of writing
jobs online. The Internet is booming, as yo probably know,
and virtually every single website needs some kind of content
to survive. Guess what. If you can write that content, you
can make money with it.

Freelance writing online has many benefits as well. First of
all you can work from anywhere, anytime. Second, you'll be
able to write about the topics you are interested in. Third,
the process is much simpler than trying to monetize a website:
you deliver your writing work and the publisher sends your
payment (often on the same day).

Even if your plan is to eventually make money with your own
website you can use freelance writing to learn what kind of
content works better online, and you can also re-invest the
money you'll earn on your website (e.g., buying a logo,
upgrading your hosting plan and so on).

In fact not many people know it, but in the early days of
my websites I also used to do freelance writing work. At
one point I was making as much as $1,000 for a single
article, but I'll share how I achieved this on another
email.

If you are eager to get started, though, you can use the
job board on Problogger to find some writing jobs. Here
is the link: http://jobs.problogger.com

It's one of the best resources online, and you can browse
the listings for free.

Next week I'll talk more about freelance writing, so stay
tuned.

Best wishes,
Daniel Scocco

George, Most People Underrate This SEO Factor

Hi George

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to talk about one factor that is very important
for SEO, yet most people underrate it. This factor is
consistency.

------

If ask you people what they think is necessary to get a
website ranking high for a particular keyword, most of them
will mention things like an optimized title tag, unique
content, backlinks and so on.

While those factors are indeed important for SEO, they are
will produce very small results if you don't combine them
with consistency.

That is, you could launch a new website today with a lot
of unique content and many backlinks, but unless
you keep adding new content and getting new links
consistently over time your website would not rank high
for any competitive keyword.

The opposite is also true. Even if you launch a website
with little unique content and no backlinks, you can still
get it ranking high for competitive keywords if you
consistently keep adding new content and getting new
backlinks.

Let me illustrate this point with some numbers. Suppose
we launch two websites targeting the same keyword, website
A and website B. On website A we publish 50 articles right
away and manage to attract 500 backlinks on the first day
thanks to a social media campaign. On website B, on the
other hand, we work gradually publishing one article every
other day and getting 10 new backlinks per week. After
6 months I would be willing to bet that website B is
ranking higher than website A, and that is because it has
consistency.

In fact Google confirmed in the past that the pace at which
a website publishes new content and gain new backlinks is
indeed used inside its algorithm.

Whenever you plan an SEO campaign for one of your sites
in the future remember that slow and steady can win the
race, even on the Internet!

George, Here's A Complete Guide To Buy Websites

Hi George

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Last week I talked about buying websites, and why it can be very
profitable. Some people emailed me back asking for more tips and
tricks to buy websites, though, so I decided to write a complete
guide for it.

Among other things you'll find what steps you need to take before
buying any website to make sure you'll not make a bad investment,
where you can find websites to buy and how much you should offer
the owners.

Here is the link to the article on my blog:

If you have any more questions just leave a comment and I'll answer
it as soon as possible.

George, Here's All You Need to Know About Freelance Writing

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Remember when I talked about freelance writing a couple of weeks
ago? I mentioned I had more things to share on the topic, and
here they come!

------

You probably don't know it, but back in 2005, when I was building
my first blogs and websites, I also started freelance writing to
supplement my online income. My websites weren't earning much, so I
figured writing for people with larger sites could work, and it did.

After six months or so I was already making over $2,000 monthly
from my freelance writing gigs, and I was able to invest that money
back into my own blogs and websites (e.g., purchasing custom
designs, logos, web hosting and so on).

Apart from the money, though, I liked the freelance projects
because they allowed me to write on a wide range of topics, and
they also helped me to grow a network of online contacts, which
came very handy down the road when I was promoting my own sites and
products.

In other words, I think freelance writing is a great way to make
money online, and that is why I invited Ali Hale (a friend of mine
and professional freelance writer) to create a Freelance Writing
Course with me. She created all the learning material, and I
managed the technical side.

The course is a six-week program designed to teach you everything
you need to know about freelance writing online. The six modules
are:

Week 1: Maximizing Your Writing Productivity to Multiply Your
Profits
Week 2: Website Setup, Promotion and Guest Blogging
Week 3: Writing Content For The Web, A Totally Different Beast
Week 4: Finding Clients and Developing High Paying Jobs
Week 5: Running A Freelance Writing Business Efficiently
Week 6: Using Social Media To Promote Yourself and Land More
Writing Jobs

Each week you have a list of assigned tasks to complete, and you
can also network with other members and ask questions on a private
forum.

We first launched the course back in January of this year, and the
feedback was great. That is why we decided to open the doors again.
Since we want the students to follow the course together, though,
enrollment will be open for 72 hours only (i.e., from today until
Friday).

If you think the course could be the right one for you I recommend
you check it out today. Here is the link to the page where you
can get all the details and sign-up:

http://www.dailywritingtips.com/freelance-writing-course/

There are a bunch of bonuses included, and we offer a 60-day money
back guarantee, so check it out.

Talk to you soon,
Daniel Scocco

George, Buying Websites Can Be Profitable, Too

Hi George

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to talk about buying websites, and why it's a really
good time to do it.

-----

If you browse around the web you'll mostly find people talking
about selling websites, and about how profitable it can be. While
that is true, the opposite is also true. That is, buying websites
can be quite profitable too, and here is why: valuations of
websites are still small when comparred to offline investments.

Let's illustrate this point with some examples. If you buy real
estate (e.g., a house or an apartment) as investment, you'll
probably be able to rent it for 1% of the price you paid for it
(the percentage will be higher in some regions and smaller in
others, but 1% is a good ballpark number). This means that a
$200,000 apartment would produce a return of $2,000 monthly, and it
also means you would need 8.3 years to recover your investment.

If you buy a small business, similarly, you should expect to have a
return of 20% yearly or so. This means that a $200,000 business
will produce around $40,000 in annual profits, or $3,300 monthly.
In this case the pay back period is 5 years.

What about buying a website? Most website owners are willing to let
their babies go for 1 or 2 times their annual revenues. For
instance, you could probably buy a website that makes $2,000
monthly anywhere from $24,000 up to $48,000. For the sake of
simplicity let's use the middle point and assume you could buy it
for $36,000. This means that your annual return would be 66%
(compared to 12% on real estate and 20% with a small business).
Additionally your pay back period would be 1 year and a half,
compared to 8.3 years with real estate and 5 years with a small
business.

Sounds like a good investment to you? You bet it is.

Now don't get the wrong idea. While buying websites can be quite
profitable, you'll get burned if you don't have experience in this
market and if you are not willing to do your home work (i.e., spend
enough time shopping around, veryfind all the stats before buying
and so on).

The strategy I recommend is to start small, and then build your way
up. For example, you could start buying a small site that makes
$100 monthly (paying around $2,000 for it), and then once you learn
the ropes you consider larger deals.

Good luck,
Daniel Scocco
