George, Niche Websites Are Still Going Strong

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to talk about niche websites, and why they are still
going strong around the web.

------

First things first, what is a niche website? It is basically a site
that targets a very small niche, like "pinot noir wines" or "sample
resumes." Such websites usually have a small number of pages, say
10 or 20, and their main goal is to rank in the first page of Google
for a specific keyword. Once they achieve that, they will receive
a lot of organic traffic (i.e., traffic from search engines), and
they will monetize such traffic with CPC ads like Google AdSense or
with affiliate marketing.

I prefer to call these sites "mini websites," but many people refer
to them as "niche websites," so we'll be using both terms
interchangeably here.

A couple of years ago some online marketers started to criticize
niche websites, saying that they were doomed to vanish, being
replaced in the search results by large content portals that
covered a wide range of topics.

Guess what? This didn't happen, and niche websites are still going
strong. In fact, recently Google implemented a change in its
algorithm that favored them even more. The change basically made it
harder for large websites to rank for narrow keywords with their
internal pages, especially if those pages are not content rich.

Want an example? Consider the keyword "starcraft 2 download." With
the change in the Google algorithm it is now easier for a mini
website called StartCraft2Download.com to appear in the first page
for that search query, and it is now harder for a large website like
Mahalo.com to do the same simply by publishing an internal page
talking about that topic.

Another criticism that mini websites receive is that they are more
unstable than large, authority websites. In other words, one day
they could be in the first page for a specific keyword, and the
other day they are gone.

This can happen if you use black hat techniques to get your mini
website ranked, but otherwise the above criticism is not true at
all.

If your mini website has all the information about a specific niche
or keyword, and a decent amount of quality backlinks, Google will
consider it an authority inside that small niche, and hence it will
give high rankings for the mini website.

This is the point that most people miss. A mini website can also be
an authority site, although an authority on a very small niche.

Now don't get me wrong. Building a mini website that ranks
high for a competitive keyword is not easy nor fast. You'll need to
work on the content, promote it and get a good amount of backlinks.

But, if you know how to do these things, developing a mini website
when you have some time available could be a smart investment.

In the future I'll talk more about building and profiting from
mini websites, so stay tuned.

Talk to you soon,
Daniel Scocco

George, Here Is an eBook For You, From My Latest Online Project

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to give you an eBook I created for my latest online
project. This is one of the benefits of being a newsletter
subscriber, you always get my freebies first!

-----

Many of my "offline" friends ask me how they can make their own
websites. Instead of explaining it to each of them, I tried to find
a simple online tutorial for that. After some research I couldn't
find any I liked, so I decided to create one. That is the story
behind my latest project. Here is the URL of the site:

http://www.howtomakeawebsite.net

On the homepage of that site you'll find a complete tutorial
explaining how anyone can get a website up and running in a matter
of hours. I cover how to choose the domain, how to get a hosting
plan, how to install WordPress, how to choose a nice template and
how to customize the website design.

In the future I'll publish new articles there, covering aspects
like website promotion, basic search engine optimization and so on.

The site also has an email newsletter, where people can subscribe
to get notified about the future articles. In order to promote the
newsletter I wrote an eBook, titled "50 Mistakes to Avoid When
Making Your Website." Since you are already subscribed to my Daily
Blog Tips newsletter, I won't ask you to subscribe to another one
just to get the book. You can download it directly by clicking
on the link below:

http://www.howtomakeawebsite.net/50-mistakes.zip

The content of the eBook is for beginners (after all that is the
audience of my new site), but I am sure you'll pick some good points
by reading it.

Finally, I wanted to ask you a small favor. If you have a blog about
technology, design or anything related to websites, could you link
to that new site? You could mention it inside a post, recommend
the free eBook, or anything else you see fit. Any help is
appreciated!

George, Here Is A Tool To Check Your Search Rankings

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to talk about search rankings. Do you know how to
actually check your rankings? If you answered "Sure, I just need to
search on Google for my keywords" then you probably just know half
of the story...

-------

Searching on Google for your keywords is indeed the simplest way to
check your rankings, but it is not an effective one, because the
search results you get on Google might not be the same that other
people are getting.

Let's suppose that you have a blog about celebrities, and that the
main keyword you are targeting is "photos of celebrities."

You could go to Google and search for "photos of celebrities", and
then check the position where your blog will appear. The problem is
that the rankings you'll see there are influenced by factors like
your IP address, the language of your computer, your past search
history and so on. This is part of an innovation Google introduced
a while ago called "Personalized Search."

For example, your blog might appear in the 5th position when you
search for "photos of celebrities", but this is so because you
often click on your own website, so Google is artificially
increasing the rankings of your blog when you search for it.

For all other people, however, your blog might be appearing in the
20th or 30th position.

So how do you find your real search rankings? There is a tool
called Scroogle that you can use for this purpose. Here is the

link: http://www.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/scraper.htm

It is basically a Google scraper that will get the search results
from Google with an anonymous IP address, without storing cookies,
without storing search-term records and so on.

When you run a search query on Scroogle, therefore, Google won't
have any past data about it, so the results will be the ones seen
by the average Internet user.

You can make Scroogle show 100 results at a time, and after that
you'll just need to find where your website is positioned.

Nice trick eh?

If you want to discover more useful tools like this one, come
check the http://www.onlineprofits.com training program. We have
a "Tools" section inside the members area which lists dozens of
them.

George, Do You Know How To Find Broken Links on Your Site?

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to share with you a tool that is incredibly useful
for finding broken links inside your website.

------

Broken links are nothing more than links inside your website that
point to pages that don't exist. Maybe you deleted the page because
it was not relevant anymore, or maybe your simply used a wrong URL
when creating the link. Fact is that when a user clicks on one of
those links he will see a frustrating 404 error page.

It is easy to see how broken links can negatively affect the user
experience inside your site. Apart from annoying your human visitors,
though, broken links also upset search engine bots, and if your site
has too many of them your search rankings might suffer.

For these reasons I recommend that you check for broken links on
your site at least twice a year.

Now if you have a large blog or website it would be impossible to
check all the links manually right? Luckily there is a great tool
that you can use for this purpose, called Xenu's Link Sleuth, or
simply Xenu.

Don't worry you won't need to pay anything, just download it
and install on your computer (it only runs on Windows).

Here is the official site: http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html

The design of the site is horrible, I know, but it is a legitimate
project.

Once you have the tool running, just type the URL of your website
and it will start crawling all the links. Link verification is done
on "normal" links, images, frames, plug-ins, backgrounds, and so on.

You will be able to follow the process, and in the end you will see
a report with all the broken links, redirects, valid URLs and more.

It is really a nifty piece of software, and a must have on the
tool-belt of any webmaster.

Make sure to visit http://www.dailyblogtips.com as well, as we have
some interesting posts up this week.

George, Use This Checklist Before Publishing Your Posts

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to point you to a resource I released on my blog
recently. It is a checklist you can use before publishing posts
on your blog.

------

How many times have you published a post, only to find out you
forgot to proofread and that many typos slipped through? What about
when the links you included are broken, when you used the wrong
keywords, or when you forgot to optimize the post title?

As you can see, there are many things one should check before
hitting the "Publish" button, and most of us forget about them.
That is why I decided to create "The Blog Post Checklist," with a
list of things you should check before publishing your post.

There are a total of 13 checks to make. On the post you'll find a
description of each of them, and you'll also be able to download
a PDF version of the checklist, so that you can print it out.

Here is the link:

http://www.dailyblogtips.com/the-blog-post-checklist/

Let me know if you think we should add anything else to the
checklist. You can either reply to this email or leave a comment
on the post.

George, I,'ll Make You An Offer You Can't Refuse!

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today is Black Friday, and there are many sweet deals around. I want
to propose you one that is quite good, though.

------

The first part of the deal is actually coming from HostGator. They
are basically offering a 50% discount on all hosting plans and all
term lengths, for a 24 hour period.

On top of that they are doing a special deal between 5am and 9am
(CST, or GMT -6), where you'll be able to get all plans and all
term lengths with 80% discount. This is a pretty crazy discount,
and here is why. Suppose you want to get a Dedicated Server that
costs $260 monthly. The total cost if you pay 3 years upfront would
normally be 36 x $260 = $9,360. If you grab that plan during the
discount period, however, you would pay 0.2 x $9,360 = $1,872,
basically saving $7,500....

Even if you just want to get a shared hosting account you'll be
able to save some good money. Normally their small plan costs $9
monthly, but if you sign-up with the 80% discount you'll pay only
$20 for a whole year, which is less than $2 per month!

And here comes the second part of the offer. As you probably know
HostGator is my partner on the Online Profits training program, so
if you sign-up for a hosting plan with them you'll also get a
lifetime member account to my training program.

Here is the link where you can sign-up with the Black Friday
discounts (the 80% one starts within 30 minutes):

http://secure.hostgator.com/~affiliat/cgi-bin/affiliates/clickthru.cgi?id=onlineprofits

Once you are done signing-up simply reply to this email mentioning
the domain name you hosted on HostGator, and then I'll send you
the details of your Online Profits member account.

Any doubts let me know.

See you inside,
Daniel Scocco

George, Do You Know The Drop Shipping Business Model?

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to talk about a very profitable, yet not well known
business model: drop shipping.

-----

Under the drop shipping model you'll basically create a website to
sell products. The main difference from a normal online store,
however, is that you won't need to create, store and ship
the items yourself. Instead, you'll use a drop shipper for that,
which is basically a company that will fulfill the order for you.

In other words, once a customer visits your website and makes
a purchase, you'll forward the order details to your drop shipper,
and they will ship the item to the customer.

In order to make a profit you simply need to price the products on
your website higher than what the drop shipper charges you.

Let's use an example to make things 100% clear. Suppose that
you want to sell skateboards. The first step would be to find a
company who is willing to drop ship the skateboards for you. You
could start searching on Google for big skateboard wholesalers, and
when you find some you would just need to contact them asking if
they drop ship or not.

Another resource you can use to find drop shippers is the website
http://www.wholesalecentral.com/ . It lists hundreds of companies
in all market segments.

Once you have a drop shipping partner you'll need to setup your
website, display the products you are selling and setup a payment
method. PayPal is the easiest option here.

After that you'll be ready to roll, and you will need to start
promoting the website. Suppose that one of your visitors purchased
a skateboard for $150. You would them pay $100 for the drop shipper
and forward him the order details (e.g., product id, shipping
address and so on). Finally, the drop shipper would ship the product
to your customer, and you would make a $50 profit on the deal.

Most drop shippers will even put the name of your company/website
on the package, so the customer will assume you are one selling
him the goods.

Neat huh?

As I said, this can be a very profitable business model, and not
many people explore it.

If you want to give it a shot, remember that the key to making good
money is to target a small niche. For example, creating a website
to drop ship archery gear could be a good idea, but creating one to
sell clothes would definitely be a bad idea (people just go to
Target when they want that...).

George, Do You Want Better Affiliate Marketing Results?

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to talk about a strategy you can use to
drastically improve your affiliate marketing results.

-------

As you probably know, affiliate marketing is the practice of
promoting the products and services of a merchant, in exchange for
a commission on every lead or sale you deliver.

Virtually any website or online business can use affiliate marketing
as a revenue source, and that is why you need to know how it works.

One of the most common mistakes that affiliates make when promoting
an offer is to send traffic directly to the sales page of the
merchant.

For example, let's suppose that you just signed-up for the affiliate
program of a hosting company. It would be a mistake to simply put
banners on the sidebar of your site and send your visitors directly
to the sales page of the hosting company. Why? Because you would
basically be relying on the sales pitch of that company. If it is a
bad sales pitch, your conversion rate will be low, and so will your
commissions.

A better strategy is to use a pre-sell page (also called
pre-selling). You would still place the banners on the sidebar of
your site, but instead of sending that traffic directly to the
merchant you would send it to an internal page of your site where
you make a review about the services of that hosting company.

Adding this intermediate step will reduce the overall number of
visitors that you'll send to the merchant (because some will stop
on your pre-sell page), but the conversion rate of those visitors
that do make it to the merchant sales page will much much higher,
and overall you will earn more commissions.

Why is pre-selling so powerful? First of all because visitors will
see your pre-sell content as a third party recommendation (and
hopefully as an unbiased one). When people go to a sales page, they
know that they will find a sales pitch there, and they raise their
barriers and bullshit detectors as a consequence. On a pre-sell
page inside your blog or website, however, their barriers are not
up yet, so you have the opportunity to talk to them more directly
and to communicate the selling points of the offer more efficiently.

This last point is the second reason why pre-selling works. It
basically gives you an opportunity to complement and even improve
the sales pitch of the product. For example, suppose that the
landing page of a product that you are promoting only talks about
the features of the product. The problem here is that features
don't sell, benefits do. You could therefore improve the conversion
rate by highlighting all the benefits of purchasing that product
inside your pre-sell page.

Keep in mind that pre-selling works with any type of traffic. You
could send your PPC traffic there, banners, sponsored reviews and
so on.

If you want to learn more about affiliate marketing and how you can
make money with it come check the http://www.onlineprofits.com
training program. We have one module completely dedicated to this
topic.

George, Make Sure to Invest in A Good Logo for Your Website

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to talk to you about the importance of investing in a
good logo for your website. At the end I'll also share the resource
I use to get most of my logos designed.

-----------

One of the most common questions I hear from new bloggers
and webmasters is: "Is it okay to use a free template on my site
initially, or should I purchase a premium template or hire a
designer to make a custom theme for me right away?"

The answer, as usual, is: "It depends."

If you are setting up a business website (i.e., a website where you
will sell products and/or services), then having a unique and
custom design is recommended.

If you are setting up a blog or a content based website, on the
other hand, starting with a freely available template is perfectly
fine.

Regardless of your situation, however, there is one item that
is vital for any type of website: a unique and good looking logo.

Why? For several reasons:

1. Getting a professionally designed logo is not expensive these
days. With $150 you should already be able to get one.

2. Despite not being expensive, a unique and good looking logo can
give a lot of credibility to your website.

3. You don't need to have a custom designed theme to use your logo.
If you spend some time on it you should be able to find many free
templates that will integrate well with your logo.

4. The logo is the cornerstone of your online brand, so the sooner
you have it out there for people to look, the better.

5. You will be able to use your logo in places beyond your website.
Examples include the favicon, promotional banners, ebook covers
and so on.

As you can see, for a small investment on your logo you will get a
lot of benefits.

Whenever you decide to invest on your websites, therefore, remember
that getting a unique and good looking logo is a priority.

At this point you might be asking yourself: "OK, but where can I go
to get a good looking logo for as low as $150?". The best place is a
website called 99designs. Here is link: http://www.99designs.com

There you'll be able to create a contest for your logo, and
designers will compete by submitting entries. It is not unusual to
get over 50 entries on a contest, so you'll be able to pick the
logo that is exactly what you are looking for.

If you want to learn more about the resources you can use to get
a nice design for your websites without spending a fortune, come
check the http://www.onlineprofits.com training program, as we have
one module dedicated exclusively to it.

Best wishes,
Daniel Scocco

George, Check Out My Latest Contest

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I just want to point you to a contest I am about to launch,
called "The Webmasters Challenge".

------

I love building websites, and I love competitions, and thinking
about that a couple of weeks ago I got an idea: what if we could
have a competition where webmasters would duel to see who is the
most skilled one?

It would be fun for the participants, but it would also be quite
interesting for the folks following the competition, as they would
learn a thing or two about building and profiting from websites.

Long story short today I announced the details of what I'll call "The
Webmasters Challenge". It's scheduled to start next Wednesday,
November 10. Whether you want to participate or simply follow along,
you can check the details here:

http://www.dailyblogtips.com/the-webmasters-challenge-starts-november-10/

There will be a good cash prize for the winner, and all participants
will also get access to my training program, so check it out.

How I Made $900 In The First Month With My Mini Website

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to talk about a mini website that I am building as
a case study. The results I got surprised me, and that is why I
wanted to share them with you.

------

When I re-opened the Online Profits training program back in June,
there were two main changes. First of all the course became
virtually free. That is, you just need to create a hosting account
with my hosting partner to gain a lifetime member account to the
program now.

The second change was the introduction of a new section in the
members area, called "Live Case Study." Inside that section members
would basically follow the steps I would take to build, promote and
monetize a website from scratch. I created this section because I
wanted the members to gain some practical knowledge too, learning
how to apply all the concepts they would get from the training
material.

I decided to build a mini website for the case study (also called
niche website), because you don't need to spend too much time or
money building one, and once the site is "complete," it becomes a
passive stream of income.

This doesn't mean that making money with mini websites is fast
though. I launched my mini website in July, and I was expecting to
start generating some revenues with it after three or four months.
But this little project surprised me. In the very first month it
generated $875 in profits, and I only used free methods to promote
it. I am not sure how things will evolve, but if things keep going
as they are, by the end of the year the mini website will be making
close to $2,000 per month.

If you want to follow the case study and check all the steps I am
taking to build and promote the mini website, with screenshots and
monthly reports, you just need to join the Online Profits training
program.

I say "just" because it is a no-brainer right now. You'll
pay $5 or so to sign-up for a hosting account with our partner
(HostNine), and you'll get complete access to our training
material, the live case study, the resources section, the content
library and more. Plus, you get another hosting account, and you
can use that to build your own mini website.

You can check all the details and join here:

http://www.onlineprofits.com

If you have any questions about how the training program works,
just let me know and I'll get back to you.

Talk to you next week,
Daniel Scocco

George, Do You Make This Keyword Research Mistake?

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today we'll talk about keyword research. More specifically, about
one mistake that most online marketers make when performing keyword
research.

---------

As you probably know most people rely on search engines when they
need to find any kind of information these days. That is why
keyword research is so important, because it allows you to
understand what your target visitors and customers are looking for,
how they are searching for it, and how frequently they are doing so.

Here is a practical example to help you understand the concept.
Suppose you just a wrote a post on your blog titled "20 Funny
Images of Babies." What if you changed the title to "20 Funny
Pictures of Babies," however?

From the user's point of view, both titles are too similar to
distinguish, and should not really make that much of a difference.
However, if you pick the second title mentioned, you'll have a much
higher chance of receiving traffic from search engines, because the
term "funny pictures" is almost 40 times more searched on than the
term "funny images."

How do we know that, however? It is simple, we used an online
keyword research tool. There are some paid tools available on the
market, but we don't recommend that you spend money on them. The
best and most reliable keyword research tool is a free one, and
it is provided by Google itself. It is called Google AdWords Keyword
Tool, and you can access it here:

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

Whenever you input a keyword there, the tool will tell you how many
people search for that keyword every month (along with some other
data, like the amount of advertising competition for the keyword).

It is very exciting when you find keywords that get hundreds of
thousands of searches every month, but that is exactly what leads
online marketers to the mistake we mentioned earlier. The mistake
is to assume that you should always target the keyword with the
highest number of searches.

Why is that a bad idea? Because the number of searches a keyword
gets only tells you half of the story. The other half is how many
webmasters are competing to get traffic from that keyword. In other
words, you need to evaluate both the traffic potential and the
competition for each keyword.

If you only target the high traffic keywords, you'll probably have
a hard time getting any traffic, because your posts or websites
will not rank well for these keyword. If you pick keywords with lower
traffic and lower competition, on the other hand, you will not get a
stellar traffic, but at least you'll get some traffic.

In the example we used above, therefore, you would also need to
analyze the competition for both "funny images" and "funny pictures"
before choosing which one you should target. If you believe your
site is strong enough to rank for "funny pictures", go for it. If
you are not sure, perhaps it would be wiser to go with the less
searched "funny images".

The bottom line is: target keywords you are sure you can rank for,
and gradually make your way up to the competitive ones. If do this
the other way around you'll get frustrated and end up wasting a lot
of time.

Daniel Scocco

George, Are You Using Google Webmaster Tools?

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to talk with you about a resource that every blogger
and web publisher should use: the Google Webmaster Tools.

--------

Given that Google controls around 80% of the search market, whenever
they create a tool to help you rank better, you should use it!

Google Webmaster Tools offers just that. First of all you can create
your account here: http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

Once your account is active you'll need to add your site and verify
it by placing a string on the HTML head section (they will provide
instructions).

The first thing you want to do after verifying your site is
to click on "Site Configuration" and then "Settings". There you'll
be able set your "Preferred Domain". This important to make sure
that Google will index only one version of your site (either the
one with the www. prefix, or the one without it). There is no best
choice here; it is a matter of preference. Just make sure that
the version you'll choose is actually working on your site, and not
redirecting to another version.

At this point Google won't have much data about your site, so you
can leave it there. After a couple of weeks you should login again,
and then explore the other features.

The most important section you should pay attention to is the "Crawl
Errors" one, under the "Diagnostics" link. This basically will tell
you if Google is facing any problems while crawling your site. If it
is, you should try to fix the issue immediately, or your search
rankings could suffer.

Not all errors are equally serious. The "Not Found" ones,
for example, might just be site owners that linked to the wrong URL
inside your site. Similarly, "Restricted by robots.txt" errors can
be caused by disallowing crawling of certain areas on your site
legitimately. Be careful with the "Timed out" and "Unrecheable"
errors, though, because they mean that the Google bot is not
reaching your pages correctly. If you get too many of these errors
your complete site might get de-indexed.

After exploring the "Crawl Errors" section you should take a look
at "Crawl stats" and "HTML suggestions", both under the
"Diagnostics" link.

"Crawl stats" will show you how often the Google bot is visiting
your site. The graph should be stable, if not growing. If you see
a downward trend there is something wrong there. Remember that
the more often the Google bot visits your site the higher your
authority for Google.

The "HTML suggestions" part will report problems with your meta
tags. A very common problem webmasters have is a large number of
duplicate title tags. If you have, take a look at your blog
structure to solve the problem.

That is about it. There are other interesting sections inside
the Google Webmaster Tools, but the ones I mentioned above are
directly related to the performance of your site inside Google,
so you should keep an eye on them regularly (i.e., at least once
a month).

George, Do You Want More Social Media Traffic?

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to invite you to join my Social Media Clubs. These are
basically email lists that help members get more social media
traffic and exposure to their blogs and websites. Below I explain
how they work.

-------

First of all both of my clubs are completely free to join, but they
are limited to the readers of my blog and members of my training
program. Secondly, they work pretty much as a mailing list, where
you both receive and post messages via email.

The first group is called "Wevote Club", and it is about getting
traffic from social bookmarking sites like Digg, StumbleUpon and
Delicious. Members can post one request per week. Once you send
your request other members will vote on it, on the sites you have
specified. The main rule is that only quality content is allowed to
be submitted (so no commercial stuff or content that wouldn't
be popular on these social sites naturally). If you want to join
this club you need to have an active account on those bookmarking
sites, and you need to understand how they work.

The second club is called "Retweet Club". As you might have guessed
this one is about getting traffic from Twitter. You'll basically
send a request to the club with a message that you want retweeted,
and other members will retweet it to their followers. The only
requisite for joining this club is to have a Twitter account with
at least 1,000 followers.

HOW TO JOIN

You can join either or both of the clubs. Simply reply to this email
stating your interest (please mention which of the clubs you want
to join).

Make sure to use an email address with an active Google account on
it, because I use the Google Groups platform to run the clubs.

Once I get your email I will send you an invitation, and you'll
just need to read the rules and click on a link to confirm your
desire to join the club.

I am looking forward to seeing you on the clubs!

Daniel Scocco

George, Split Testing Is A Must

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to talk about the importance of split testing for any
kind of online project or business and give you some tips on how
to get started with it.

--------

Split testing, also called A/B testing, is a testing method where
you compare a base sample with another test sample, changing one
specific variable inside it.

For example, you could have a base landing page, and then you would
compare it against a new landing page where you changed the main
headline.

If you were selling a product on that landing page, you would then
compare the conversion results of page A against page B (by
conversion I mean the percentage of the total visitors that ended
up making a purchase).

There are other testing methods out there (like the multivariate
one), but the split tests are easy to implement, easy to interpret,
and they can be applied on a wide range of situations.

That is why you should always use them.

If you have a blog where your goal is to gain as many RSS subscribers
as possible, create split tests with the location of the RSS icon,
with the message that you use to call the attention of visitors,
with the freebies you offer in return and so on.

If you have a landing page where you promote an affiliate product,
split test with the sales copy, the headline, the testimonials
and so on.

If you use PPC to drive traffic to your website or products, split
test with different keywords and bids and always try to beat the
top performing ad group.

Here is a practical example with some numbers. Let's suppose that on
top of your sidebar you have a "Subscribe to my newsletter" section,
where visitors can put their email addresses to subscribe to your
newsletter.

First of you would need to track what is the conversion rate. Just
find out what is your weekly traffic, and how many new subscribers
you get per week. If your weekly traffic is 30,000 visitors and you
gain, on average, 50 new subscribers, then your current conversion
rate is 1,66% (50 divided by 30,000).

Now you need to change one specific element on that subscription
section, and then track the result for another week or two. Let's
suppose that you changed the background color of that section,
making it yellow to call the attention of visitors.

During the next weeks your traffic kept stable at 30,000 visitors,
but you got 65 new subscribers per week on average. This means that
your conversion rate increased to 2,16%, and you should therefore
keep the changes you made. Had the conversion rate decreased, which
is possible, you would just need to revert the changes.

This is pretty much the process you'll need to repeat over and over
again, always trying to beat the top performing combination of
factors.

Obviously you should not split test every single element on your
site, else you would not have time for anything else. But it is
very important to take the time to split test the important sections
( i.e., landing pages that sell your products, pages where your
you get email subscribers and so on).

some interesting posts up this week.

George, Check Out What The Online Profits Members Are Saying

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here, and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to share with you some of the feedback I received
from current Online Profits members.

-------

I mentioned in the past how the Online Profits training program is
by far the most complete one on the web, right? But I am biased,
and that is why I wanted to give you the opinion of members who
went through the program in the past (they are real, and if you I
can give you the email of one of them so you can ask for
confirmation). Check it out:

"I signed up for this course because I wanted to learn more about
Internet marketing. I gotta say, I have learned more on this course
than on my M.Sc Electronic Publishing degree!" (Lavanya A.)

"I think Online Profits is the best choice out there, because you
benefit from the team approach of multiple experts packaged
together, and get great content from many experts delivered in
a professional, no-hype format." (Sarah Bush)

"The amount of knowledge that was collected and lessons that were
sent out far exceeded my expectations. I was especially impressed
with the fact that Daniel took the time to answer every question
and it was done so promptly. With members from countries from all
over the world - that is no easy task." (Malini Sarma)

"This is the most comprehensive program I've seen. Rather
than comb through all the archives of all the websites devoted to
this topic looking for the bits of information I'm interested in,
Daniel brought it all together in one place and organized it in a
logical sequence." (Judy King)

"The material provided by Online Profits is invaluable. It is all
perfectly consolidated and compiled into exactly what you need to
learn. I would highly recommend joining to anyone looking at
starting an online business." (Tylor S.)

"This course has helped me get acquainted with the different ways
of making money online. The course assumes no prior knowledge, so
it goes into detail in all the things it explains. I wish I had
access to this course before, it would have saved me countless
hours doing research on the Internet." (Javier M.)

"The course takes you from start to finish regarding the elements
you need to know to start an online business. I would recommend the
whole course to anyone who has serious ambitions to understand how
to work online. The insight and expertise is apparent, from PPC to
basic domain management, the course gives you a lot to take away."
(Chris Blacklock)

Good stuff huh?

And keep in mind that these members paid $392 to access the training
program. After that I got crazy and decided to make it almost free.

You'll just need to sign-up for a hosting account with my hosting
partner to get your member account (this is necessary because
my partner covers part of the cost when you join). You can get all
the information here:

See you inside!

George, Don't Neglect HTML Sitemaps

Hi George,

Daniel Scocco here and this is the Daily Blog Tips newsletter.

Today I want to talk with about the importance of having an HTML
sitemap on your websites. It can do wonders to your search engine
optimization.

---------

First things first, what is an HTML sitemap? It is an actual page
of your website that outlines the complete structure of your site,
and that links to all the important pages on your site.

If you want to see an example, check the "Archives" section of my
blog here: http://www.dailyblogtips.com/archives/

I call it "Archives", but that is nothing more than an HTML sitemap,
because it outlines the structure of all the posts I have published
there month by month, and it also links to all of them.

Now it is important to not confuse an HTML sitemap with an XML one.
An XML sitemap also outlines the structures of your site, but the
XML format is understood by search engine bots only. If you visit
an XML sitemap you will just see a bunch of code.

XML sitemaps are useful if you are having crawling problems on your
site. That is, if search engine bots are not indexing your pages
correctly. If you are not having such problems, however, having
an XML sitemap is not necessary.

The HTML sitemap, on the other had, can be very useful no matter
what. First of all because it is useful for human visitors, as it
allows them to find any page within your site quickly.

Second, and most important, HTML sitemaps represent a very good way
to distribute your link juice and PageRank among the pages of your
site.

Ideally you want to have all the pages linking to the HTML sitemap
and the HTML sitemap linking back to all the pages (you can exclude
non important pages like your Privacy Policy or contact page if
you want). One way to accomplish this is to put a link to the HTML
sitemap on the main navigation menu or on the footer of your site.

Finally, here is a hot tip that very few people know: getting
external backlinks pointing to your HTML sitemap is very good for
SEO. Why? Because that link juice will pass directly to all
the pages on your site. If you get a backlink pointing to an
internal page (e.g., a blog post) it will need to pass through at
least one hop before it passes juice to other pages. Links to the
HTML sitemap, on the other hand, pass juice directly to all other
pages on your site.

The next time you do a guest post, therefore, consider pointing
the byline link to your HTML sitemap instead of your homepage.

If you are using WordPress and want to create an HTML
sitemap like mine, just search on Google for "SGR Clean Archives."
That is the name of the plugin that creates the sitemap for you.

If you want to become a master of search engine optimization you
should check my Online Profits training program. We have two SEO
modules there, covering the A to Z of search engines. The lessons
were written by two world-class SEOs too: Michael Gray and Hamlet
Batista. Here is the link if you want to join:
