The three worst mistakes bloggers make ... BEFORE they start blogging

Have you started your blog yet?

If not, you might be at risk of one of these five major
mistakes.

As editor of DailyBlogTips, I see a fair few new blogs sprout up,
and I hear from a lot of new bloggers through comments and emails.
These mistakes are all easy to avoid, but they're ones I see too
many people making.

Let me run you through them so YOUR blog can get off to a
brilliant start.

**Mistake #1: Waiting For the Perfect Moment**

This one's such a tempting mistake to make.

After all, you want your blog to succeed, and that means
making sure you're ready. Perhaps you've been reading DailyBlogTips
and ProBlogger, and Copyblogger, and a bunch of other blogs) for
months now, trying to take in as much information as you can.

Maybe you're waiting for life to be less busy. Maybe you're
waiting for inspiration. Maybe you're waiting until you feel ready.

The truth is, you'll probably never feel 100% ready. There'll
never be a "perfect" moment to start your blog. And by waiting
longer, your end goal (perhaps making a living blogging) just gets
further away.

**Mistake #2: Only Thinking About the Money

While I'm all in favour of earning money from your blog --
it's definitely nice to eat and pay the rent! -- I see too many
bloggers who ONLY think about the money.

It takes hard work and often a bit of time (think several
months) to build up a blog and business that brings in a steady
income. If you choose a topic purely because you think it has good
earning potential, you're very likely to quit after a few weeks.

Instead, choose to blog about something that genuinely
interests you. That way, your posts will be engaging and authentic
... and you'll be much more likely to actually make some money.

**Mistake #3: Choosing the Wrong Blogging Platform**

There are a huge range of different blogging platforms out
there, and when you're new, it's tough to know which to go with.
Back when I launched my first "pro" blog, I nearly made the serious
mistake of using Blogger.

While Blogger is fine if you're just blogging for fun, as a
hobby, it's not a particularly good platform for building a
professional blog that'll be the cornerstone of a business. Instead,
you want to use WordPress (preferably self-hosted, from
WordPress.org, but the hosted version at WordPress.com is an OK
alternative).

I've seen so many bloggers talk about being held back by their
platform -- so don't make this mistake. Yes, it's possible to
switch, but it's much easier to get it right from day one.
